What is a blog?
A blog is a social
phenomena on the Internet that consists of a website with posts that
are organized chronologically, it is regularly updated and visitors
can leave comments. A blog can be written by one person or it can be
collaborative. People used to use it as a personal diary, but today we can
see it also has different uses, for example: it can treat about a
particular topic (hobbies, fashion, literature, music..), it can be
used by companies in order to talk to customers or even it can be
used to share news with the world. Blogs also bring people together
and help to create relationships where people learn, share ideas,
make friends or even do business.
According to the
book Innovation in Learning and Teaching Interaction, Reflection
and IT, a blog is a tool
that can also be used in Education as an alternative to the
classroom: learners can create blogs and share their interests,
hobbies and participate by reading and commenting their classmates' blogs but always keeping in mind that they cannot use bad language,
post pictures of themselves or give personal information. This
supposes that learners are not only going to write for teachers, but
also for their parents and other classmates. In the case of
Education, we have three types of blogs highlighted by Aaron Campbell
(2003): tutor blogs where we can find information about the
course, materials for the subject, activities or even in the case of
language subjects tutors can share their reflections about the target
language, class blogs that
are extracurricular and they are shared by tutors and learners, and
learner blogs where
the blog is individual and they can write about their interest and
comment on other blogs.
